Heaven for Herons .... Gorging for Gators!

Florida and Georgia are hot and dry! Fires have been an issue and the region needs rain. One consequence is shrinking surface water concentrates the "soup" for shorebirds, waders, and gators too! I am having so much fun! When I was a kid growing up on Thornton Lake I spent hours alone on the lake dreaming that I was among the critters I am seeing now! My dream is coming true!

Black Neck Stilts and other shore birds find concentrations of crustaceans and micro critters in remaining waters ... with long legs folded the Stilt sits protecting her eggs.

As a child on Thornton Late I did see Great Blue Herons; there size, slow wing beat, and guttural squack seemed prehistoric and primeval ... Here I have seen Great Blues, Little Green, Tri-Colored Herons and Egrets galore! Gorgeous ...

Schools of fish in shallow water make for easy pickings!

Watch this Heron work on a pretty large catfish

Alligators too have followed the remaining water into channels and pools ...

The gators would follow Murphy as she cool off wading along the shore ...
